The Reading Essential Life
In the book, Reading Essential by Regie Routman,, she talks about the importance of teachers being knowledgeable about " teaching practices, credible research, and how students develop as learners." As I read chapter 1, I thought about how it's vital for teachers to continue ongoing professional development sections. We don't always agree with having to attend meetings to help us grow as professionals, but this section helped me to realize at a greater level that we must be educated as to how to meet our students' needs.
She also explained the importance of teaching students with special needs the same way that you would teach all students. Routman stated that students are often labeled. Therefore, teachers should teach students and not labels that have been placed on them.
Routman believes that students cannot learn from teachers until they have bond with them. I found this to be true. Some students will not give you their all until they know that you care about them. This is one reason why I feel that teachers should bond with students.
As teachers, we must learn about our students, and our students should learn about us as well. Routman explains why teachers should always read, and they should share their books with their students. This sends a message that reading is important. It's vital for teacher to model reading for students because some students do not know how to read.

I read this book too, Annette, and your description of her priority on bonding reminds me of your commitment to knowing students as individuals, establishing a respectful community, and bonding with your students. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Annette,
ReplyDeleteLike you I really appreciated Routman's reminders in this chapter about the importance of building classroom community with our students and taking time to form relationships with them that are based on who they are, what they are interested in, where they come from, and where they want to go. I also appreciated how she reminded us of the importance of us sharing who we are and opening up our reading lives to our students. We are reading role models too and seeing our now stack and our next stack of books and hearing us use a personal reading text to model a reading strategy sends a powerful message about the joy of being a lifelong reader.
