Blog 2 Why Aren't All Kids Successful Readers? Lori Roberts

Struggling readers have not developed what is referred to as "a reading process system."  This is described as an integration of strategies that proficient readers use to make meaning from text.  It is mentioned in the text how important it is to be "early rather than late" when identifying struggling readers.  Often times struggling readers plod through the early grades falling further and further behind.  We need to get an early start with these students and begin building the reading process system.  When students continue with poor reading habits and lack of strategies these habits become harder and harder to overcome as they get older.  As teachers it is our responsibility to become knowledgable about how reading works (how children learn to read) and to help students integrate their system of strategies.

  1. So very true!! It is just like a disease. Catch it early and save a life. So many students just go from grade to grade without any real progress and by the time they are teenagers the ship has sailed. I think that's why RTI is so critical in the early grades. It takes a village to raise a child AND a READER.

  2. Hi Lori,
What book and chapter are you referring to in your blog post? I agree with the author's quote you are citing that it is important to be early with our interventions rather than late so we can provide support to our students as readers. Tell me more about your experience with providing intervention to students.

  3. Lori,

I think it's vital that struggling readers are caught in grades k-3. I believe that as students get older, it' harder for them to improve their skills. For this reason, children should be diagnosed early so they can get the assistance they need to be successful as they get older. I don't think that it's impossible for students to improve their reading skills as they get older. They just have to work harder to get caught up. I've always been told that students improve reading by reading. As teachers, we have to make sure that all students are reading. Also, I think that RTI is crucial for the early grades. At my school, we are definitely focusing on students in grades k-3.

  4. I too agree! I am thankful that my school and district use the Reading Recovery program. It certainly works wonders in the lower grades. However, I wish we had its counterpart for kids in grades 3-6. These last few years I have had the pleasure of teaching students in 6th grade that I also taught in third grade. Our strugglers are still the same. Most of the time they have certainly improved but they are often still the lowest readers in the grade level. I plan to battle this phenomena!! Keep fighting the good fight!

    1. I agree with you about Reading Recovery. Our district had this program in the past but no longer. I saw the benefits. Wish we could bring it back. I was sharing with our reading coach just this week about trying to use some of the strategies in my classroom with my struggling readers.
